Colloquially named Moffett Trailers are Curtainsided or Flatbed Trailers that have the ability to carry specially designed Forklift Trucks on the Rear of the Trailer which, when necessary, allows the Driver/Operator to Load/Unload the Goods being Transported if there is no alternative method available at the premises concerned. The Trailers are specially modified with Forklift Tyne Sleeves and Brackets which allow the widely known ‘Moffett Mounty’ and ‘Manitou Forklifts’  etc. to plug themselves into the Rear of the Trailer and then Raise Themselves Up, clear of the Road Surface for Transportation. The Forklift is deemed to be part of the Trailer’s Unladen Weight and therefore reduces the Trailer’s Payload Capacity accordingly.

As the Forklift, when mounted, will likely obscure the Trailer’s brake and indicator lights the Forklift plugs into the Trailer’s electrics thus using the mounted Forklift as a Trailer Lighting Board by utilising the brake and indicator lights of the Forklift itself.

Because a rear mounted Forklift applies an additional Point Load to the extreme rear of the Trailer it effectively places a Bending Moment about the Running Gear as; ‘Weight of Forklift x Distance of Forklift from Centre of Suspension’. This Bending Moment creates a Lifting Force Reaction at the Trailer’s Front Coupler. This may require a Front Balance Weight at the very front of the TRailer to ensure there is sufficient weight imposed on the Prime Mover. However, that is dependent on the Length of Trailer concerned together with Payload carried. For example, it is unlikely a Full-Length Trailer carrying a full Uniform Load, will require a Front Balance Weight whereas a short Trailer running empty probably will. However, the number and position of the Trailer Axles also have to be considered in the Trailer Loading Calculation.
